Why Letters Still Matter Today
Before WhatsApp and DMs, letters were how people stayed connected. They carried love, news, and even world-changing ideas. Think about it, some of the most powerful speeches, movements, and even historical records started as letters.
Even in today’s digital age, letters remain meaningful. People write them to express gratitude, send words of encouragement, or advocate for important causes. Governments continue to receive letters that influence policy decisions, while handwritten notes leave lasting impressions in both personal and professional relationships. Whether on paper or digital, letters remain a powerful tool for connection, persuasion, and change.
And this year, young Malaysians have the chance to use that power for something big.
The Universal Postal Union’s (UPU) 54th International Letter-Writing Competition is here, and if you’ve ever wanted to make an impact with your words, this is your chance!
Writing a letter is a journey in itself. From the first word to the final signature, each sentence holds meaning, purpose, and emotion.
What is the UPU International Letter-Writing Competition About?
Organised by the Universal Postal Union (UPU), this competition encourages youths to express their thoughts on global issues through the power of the written word. Through the collaboration with UPU, Pos Malaysia helps bring this global competition to young Malaysians, providing them with the opportunity to gain international recognition.
This Year’s Theme: "If You Were the Ocean, What Would You Say?"

This year’s challenge is to write from the ocean’s perspective; to give it a voice. Your letter should be powerful, emotional, and inspire action. Maybe it’s a plea to stop plastic waste, a message of hope, or even a wake-up call. Whatever you write, make it count!
